9 As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.

10 While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples.

11 The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

12 He heard this and said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.

13 Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

9 예수님께서 그곳을 지나가시다가, 마태오라는 사람이 세관에 앉아 있는 것을 보시고, "나를 따라라." 하고 이르시자, 그는 일어나 예수님을 따랐다.

10 예수님께서 집에서 음식을 잡수시는데, 많은 세리와 죄인들이 와서 예수님과 그분의 제자들과 함께 자리를 같이하였다.

11 이를 본 바리사이들이 그분의 제자들에게 말하였다. "왜 너희 스승은 세리와 죄인들과 함께 음식을 먹느냐?"

12 예수님께서 이 말씀을 들으시고 그들에게 말씀하셨다. "건강한 이들에게는 의사가 필요하지 않지만, 병든 이들에게는 필요하다.

13 너희는 가서 ‘나는 자비를 원하고 제사를 원하지 않는다.’는 말씀이 무슨 뜻인지 배워라. 나는 의인이 아니라 죄인을 부르러 왔다."

On this Independence Day, as we celebrate freedom, the Gospel reminds us of the deeper freedom Christ offers—mercy and healing. Jesus calls Matthew, a tax collector considered a sinner, demonstrating that forgiveness is offered to all, regardless of past mistakes. When challenged by the Pharisees, Jesus emphasizes compassion over ritual, pointing our hearts towards genuine mercy and love.

Today, let us reflect on our own lives. Are we open to Christ calling us beyond our comfort zones? Do we embrace those in need of healing without judgment? As a nation honors liberty, let us also honor the spiritual liberty given through God’s grace. May we live with hearts of mercy—even when it costs us a little more empathy.
